The Cornell Program

In September 2005, the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell launched a new program to advance the emerging field of shelter medicine. The purpose of this program is to educate veterinary students and post-graduate veterinary residents in all aspects of shelter medicine and to advance and disseminate scientific knowledge in the field. As one of only a handful of comprehensive shelter medical programs at veterinary colleges in the U.S., the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell is elevating the profile of shelter medicine and the critical need for medical programs in all animal shelters.

Cornell is taking a leadership role in this new, life-saving frontier in veterinary medicine

We are developing an important model program for shelter medical education for veterinarians and outreach to animal shelters. There is no doubt that this model will have a national impact on veterinary education and on medical programs within shelters.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of Maddie's Fund for the initial development of the core of this program. Short-term support is needed to enable us to add components to our program, and long-term support is needed to sustain the program and to ultimately allow us to fulfill our vision of improving the lives of shelter pets and reducing euthanasia of homeless pets.
