Preventive Medicine

As humane organizations, one of the central missions of animal shelters is to promote the physical and mental welfare of the animals in their care. Practicing preventive medicine is one of several means of optimizing overall physical and behavioral health, as well as preventing and managing infectious diseases.

Enhancement of overall physical health or prevention of disease, encompasses many strategies, including (but not limited to) vaccination, sanitation, good nutrition, humane housing, behavioral enrichment, isolation facilities, and disease surveillance.

Cultivation of overall mental health or prevention of behavioral deterioration, includes humane housing, enrichment programs, daily exercise, behavioral modification programs, and stress reduction.
