The Isospora spp. which infect cats and dogs are a subclass of Coccidia, which are spore-forming protozoa.

The dose of ponazuril which is effective against coccidial infections for dogs and cats is currently uncertain as ponazuril was originally marketed for horses with equine protozoal myelitis, another protozoal infection. Please consult with a veterinarian for dosages and treatment durations, both for prophylactic use and for treating confirmed or presumptive infections.

In the shelter setting, we currently recommend one dose at intake for all kittens and young cats, repeated at least once 1-2 weeks later. For treatment of infection, we recommend ponazuril once daily for three consecutive days. Care should be taken to keep kittens from re-contaminating themselves. Cleaning litter boxes frequently is the best preventative step to take as it takes at least 12 hours for oocysts to sporulate, i.e., become infectious.
